Environmental measurements

Environmental measurement is a data collection activity or investigation involving the assessment of chemical, physical, or biological factors in the environment which affect the environment, human health or the quality of life.

Waste-related measurement tasks may include evaluation of the location of the landfill (land survey) and its possible impact on the environment, while monitoring may include laboratory testing of waste (waste composition, landfill gases) or soil and ground water for signs of contamination.

Air quality measurements are required to determine the level of emissions and their impact distance mainly from transport-heavy and industrial areas. In order for the area to be considered safe for living or working, level of air pollution must comply with national standards (for example in regards to particulate matter, gases like Nitrogen dioxide, Sulfur dioxide, Carbon monoxide, etc.).

Other sampling and laboratory tests are required to determine if there has been water or soil contamination in industrial or communal areas (drinking water, ground water, waste water).

Environmental noise pollution relates to noise caused by road, rail and airport traffic, industry, construction, or any other kind of human activities. Prolonged exposure to noise can lead to serious health effects mediated by the human endocrine system and by the brain, such as sleep disturbance, cardiovascular diseases, annoyance (a feeling of discomfort affecting general well-being), cognitive impairment and mental health problems.

Environmental measurements are necessary in order to assess the extent of the project’s compliance with national regulations, quality standards and laws. In Hungary only accredited measurements are accepted by the environmental authorities.

SÖVIT Ltd. can provide environmental measurements, sampling and laboratory tests in the following categories:

Waste assessment

  • land surveying of landfills
  • landfill-gas measurements
  • waste composition

Air quality assessment

Emission measurement of stationary air pollution point sources:

  • measurements of continuous emission of gas components (usually CO2, CO, O2, NOX, SO2, TOC)
  • measurements for solid emissions (dust measurements)
  • measurement of carrier gas flow and physical characteristics
  • measurements of other parameters of point sources for pollutants (organic solvents, hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, metals, etc.)
  • measurements of gas turbine, gas engine emission

Measurements of air pollution at workplace:

  • determination of total and respirable dust concentration
  • measurement of air components (organic solvent, hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, metals, etc.).

Water and soil

Measurements of drinking water, ground water, waste water (industrial and communal):

  • Water and soil sampling (from surface or bore-hole)
  • Water quality testing, sewage analytics (general water chemistry, metals, TPH, organic compounds, etc.)
  • Drilling and establishment of temporary or permanent monitoring wells for sampling

Noise pollution

  • Calculation of impact distance:
  • Noise measurements
  • Ambient noise
  • Workplace noise
  • Noise from industrial and transport activities
